Vlieger & Vandam

The highly original and innovative fashion accessory brand Vlieger & Vandam established in 2004 is the collaboration of Dutch design couple Carolien Vlieger and Hein van Dam.

 

Known for their use of unusual techniques combined with fine craftsmanship and luxury materials Vlieger & Vandam have developed a unique process for embossing their now famous three-dimensional shapes into leather, their benchmark ‘Guardian Angel’ bag being the epitome of their distinctive expertise.

Born in 2002 The Guardian Angel bag is an instant media hit and in 2005 the MoMA (Museum of Modern Art in New York) includes it in their ‘Safe Design Takes On Risk’ exhibition. Subsequently Vlieger & Vandam bags are being exhibited worldwide and are part of the permanent collections in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Design Museum in Helsinki and the Museum of Bags and Purses in Amsterdam, which is actually just around the corner from their studio.

One cozy afternoon, the two girls were chatting, when they got to sketching their dream designer bag. A surprising idea popped up – “How amazing it would be if a two-dimensional hand-drawn illustration could come to life as a real bag!” They explored every possibility, rendering fantasy handbags in perspective, and giving birth to JumpFromPaper™.

Cartoon-like outlines and bright and cheerful colors add a brisk yet funky flavor. And despite the slim appearance, each JumpFromPaper™ bag has a roomy interior to accommodate personal belongings and even iPad/tablets.
